19TH November, New York- Peter Matthiessen’s (left) great American epic–Killing Mister Watson, Lost Man’s River, and Bone by Bone–was conceived as one vast mysterious novel. Now, his bold new rendering of the whole, Shadow Country is now the 2008 fiction winner of the National Book Award.

11th November - Swansea, Wales. A 29-year-old writer originally from Vietnam and now living in New York, is the second winner of one of the world's biggest literary awards, the £60,000 ($94,000) Dylan Thomas Prize. Nam Le, is the fiction editor at the Harvard Review, beat five rivals with his debut collection of short stories The Boat.

London 14th October The White Tiger, a debut novel by Aravind Adiga, has won the 2008 Man Bookerprize and with it the £50,000 prize. The novel is described as a ‘compelling, angry and darkly humorous’ novel about a man’s journey from Indian village life to entrepreneurial success. It was described by one reviewer as an ‘unadorned portrait’ of India seen ‘from the bottom of the heap’. More
Baltimore- Ironically, with the Boucheron 2008, "Charmed to Death" Conference happening on her own door-step, local resident Laura Lippman (right)has dominated the Mystery Award season. Her book, What the Dead Know, is this years winner in the Best Novel category of the MaCavity, the Anthony and the Barry! The only award it didn't take-out was in the hard-boiled PI genre award, the Shamus, which was won by Big City, Bad Blood by Sean Chercover. See Laura Lippman on Book Award TV
