The Book Sense Book of the Year Award was inaugurated at Book Expo America 2000. ABA rededicated the award (previously known as the ABBY) in recognition of a new era in bookselling, as well as the important role the Book Sense Picks List has played for independent booksellers in discovering and spreading the word about books of quality to all stores, and readers, nationwide.
Throughout the year, Book Sense independent booksellers from across the country nominate for inclusion in the monthly Book Sense Picks the books that they most enjoyed hand selling to their customers. The books on each list represent a combined national and local staff pick selection of booksellers' favorite's from more than 1,200 independent bookstores with Book Sense.

....................March 21, Few surprises with the 2008 winners of the 2008 Book Sense Book of the Year Awards. Formerly known as the ABBY Award, the award honors the titles American Booksellers Association members most enjoyed hand selling during the last year.
Khaled Hosseini must be making booksellers very happy as A Thousand Splendid Suns, which picked-up the fiction prize and just keeps rolling on gathering awards and nominations on a monthly basis Caldecott Medal winner, Brian Selznick's (right) The Invention of Hugo Cabret
is now officially in the hunt for one of the most awarded children's books of the last 6 months adding the Book Sense Childrens's Literature accolade to its achievements.
Mo Willems was also in the winners circle again for the ubiquitous Knuffle Bunny, who, if he hasn't already, will surely find a way in to every American home in 2008. Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity is a delightful book and was a worthy winner of the Children's Illustrated award.
Perhaps the only surprise, though obviously not to the booksellers, was the nonfiction prize winner, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver. Well done to all.

An atmospheric, gritty, and compelling novel of star-crossed lovers, set in the circus world circa 1932, by the best selling author of Riding Lessons. Sara Gruen has produced a compelling page turner that has been awarded the Adult Fiction Award by the Independent booksellers network.
Beautifully written, Water for Elephants is illuminated by a wonderful sense of time and place. It tells a story of a love between two people that overcomes incredible odds in a world in which even love is a luxury that few can afford
Review- The New York Times - Elizabeth Judd
Circuses showcase human beings at their silliest and most sublime, and many unlikely literary figures have been drawn to their glitzy pageantry, soaring pretensions and metaphorical potential. Unsurprisingly, writers seem liberated by imagining a spectacle where no comparison ever seems inflated, no development impossible. For better and for worse, Gruen has fallen under the spell. With a showman's expert timing, she saves a terrific revelation for the final pages, transforming a glimpse of Americana into an enchanting escapist fairy tale.
About Sara Gruen
Sara is a Canadian-born dual citizen (Canadian and American) who moved to the States in 1999 for a technical writing job. When she was laid off two years later, instead of looking for another job, she decided to take a gamble on writing fiction full-time. Fortunately, the gamble paid off and she’s working Ape House, her fourth novel. Sara lives in northern Illinois with her husband, three children, two dogs, two cats, three goats, and horse in an environmentalist community. They are relocating to North Carolina this summer, and Sara already has her eye on another horse and a donkey
